Lunar Eclipse over Red Rock Canyon

Lunar Eclipse Composite over Red Rock Mountains

This shot of the Lunar Eclipse is set over Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas.  With the mountain range so close on the horizon the moon set earlier so I was only able to capture up until and including the full lunar eclipse.

This is a composite shot of a series of moon shots beginning at 2:30 am and then every thirty minutes thereafter.  (So 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00, 4:30 and 5:00).  I shot with my Canon 5DS R with my Tamron 150-600 at f/5.6, ISO 100 and shutter speed of 1/1000.  When the moon eclipsed I had to adjust the ISO and shutter speed in order to balance the exposure being careful not to reduce the shutter speed too much in order to avoid motion blur from the moon.

The foundation shot of the mountains is a long exposure using the moon light to wash the clouds and mountains with nice highlights.  Here I used my Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II USM at 24mm, f/2.8, ISO 100 for 30 seconds.

I used Lightroom to develop the individual images and then blended the seven images together in Photoshop to create the final composite image.
