Cannon Beach is one of the more popular beaches in northern Oregon. It is known for its long sandy beach and the famous Haystack Rock. Haystack Rock is home to many seagulls and serves as a migratory home for the Tufted Puffin. In 1846 a cannon from the USS Shark washed ashore which developed into the regional nickname for the beach and was officially adopted in 1922.
